Our goal in 6th grade is to attempt to instill a middle school concept within the elementary center. We want our students to be challenged throughout the year with opportunities to excel in projects and assignments designed to prepare them for their further education.
Our subjects include science, mathematics, language arts and social studies. Within these core classes are projects such as robotics, poetry coffee house, and middle ages/renaissance day. Sixth grade students also participate in physical education, art, library, music, Tech Lit, STEAM, and TEAMology sessions through a rotation schedule.
Another large part of our sixth grade year includes expanding the classroom through field trip experiences. Students also take trips to museums – Carnegie Museum of Art and Architecture and the Mattress Factory Museum of Installation Art. The D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program has been a vital part of the sixth grade year which culminates in a graduation and great bowling trip to emphasize the positive impact of what the students have learned. In mid-May, sixth grade students are eligible to attend the Science Camp Weekend event at Pine Springs Camp in Jennerstown, PA.
The sixth grade year comes to an exciting conclusion with tours of their next step--the Jr. High School, and a special graduation day recognizing the many achievements of our students.
