The Fort Cherry School District provides to each handicapped student related aids, services, or accommodations that are needed to provide an equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from the public school programs, including extracurricular activities. Services are provided without discrimination or cost to the student or family.
To qualify for services under a Chapter 15/Section 504 Service Agreement, a student must be of school age and have a physical or mental disability or condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities. A major life activity is identified as caring for one’s self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, concentrating, thinking, reading, communicating and working. The disability or condition must impact the student’s access to participate in the public school program.
Through an evaluation process, if a student is identified as a protected handicapped student, a Chapter 15 Section 504 Service Agreement is developed to provide equal access and opportunity to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
